Fall Fitness in the Parks Crisp mornings , warm , sunny days and cool evenings – autumn is the perfect time to walk the scenic trails of the local parks . Watch for a variety of wildlife , enjoy the sounds of the outdoors and admire the fall colors while you stride towards 10,000 steps . Now you can add in strengthening , stretching , balance , �lexibility and a little extra cardio along your route .
Outdoor �itness parks are becoming popular throughout the country and we are fortunate to have two such parks locally . Between the Maplewood Community Center and the Maplewood City Hall , there is a lovely pond and wooded area surrounded by a paved . 5 mile trail that now includes 4 �itness stations . The Oakdale Nature Center has a paved . 87 mile trail that meanders through forest , meadow and wetland . This trail now includes six �itness stations . Each station includes the equipment for two to three exercises .
How does it work ? Walk the trail and when you come to a station , try one or all of the pieces of equipment . Each station has instructions with photos for each exercise at the station . Regardless of your �itness level , there is something at each station for you . When you �inish your “ reps ,” continue on your walk to the next station . that are important in the prevention of injury and for overall health : muscle endurance and strength , core �itness , balance and �lexibility , and aerobic �itness .
Another walk in the park – a National Park – is the Mississippi River Gorge Walking Tour ( see page 4 ). A great way to include education and �itness .
