for a hard freeze by next morning. I knew from the sound of it that small sloughs would be frozen by noon. My favorite chuck wagon waterhole would be closed for the year. I woke early, grabbed a cup of coffee and drove through a sleeping town, northward. I don’t remember why, but I was alone. I drove through the darkness for an hour, arrived at my treasured 40-acre pothole, threw out half dozen decoys, and waited for daylight. The temperature was dropping by the minute, as ice formed on bobbing mallard decoys, making them front-heavy in the increasing frost. I did shoot a few ducks that morning, but that wasn’t nearly as important as the fact I was there. I was happy. Finally, this. The hunt is over, you’ve got a belly full of smalltown breakfast, you’ve been awake since 4 a.m. and you’re on the way home. The warmth of the afternoon sun is coming through the windshield, causing you overwhelming pain to stay awake. You struggle, you dip, your eyelids drop, as you try to maintain consciousness. You don’t want to fall asleep, but the warmth of the sun coming through the windshield is strong. Your partner on the other side notices the pickup leaning toward the shoulder and asks, “You alright?” Good to go, you say quickly, spreading your eyes wide to prove it.
