Dr Nestor Fylaktos is an Associate Research Scientist at the Cyprus Institute (CyI), and is mainly involved in
long-term energy system modelling for small, isolated energy systems such as in Cyprus, and provides regular
technical assistance to the government of the Republic of Cyprus. He is operating within the energy group of
the EEWRC at the CyI, and has also been involved in the technoeconomic aspects of the technologies under
development. He has worked in the Renewable Energy Industry for a number of years, and has been
instrumental in the recent expansion of the activities of the energy group though competitive grants in many
fields of energy. He has also been involved in various studies on the future of hydrocarbons’ exploration and
exploitation in the Eastern Med, chiefly from an environmental point of view. He is acutely interested in the
imminent global and European energy transition, and the socioeconomic impacts thereof.
"Environmental considerations of technological innovations in offshore gas exploration in the
Eastern Med"
This presentation examines the evolution of technologies in the offshore exploration and production of natural
gas in the Eastern Mediterranean and their future impact for the Environment, Health & Safety of the region.
The main risks come from accidental discharges to the sea by well blowouts, chemical releases and the
associated greenhouse gas emissions.
Natural gas developments move into increasing digitalisation, better designs for safety equipment and
increased automation and all these are critical for the future of the industry.
