Basic Web Mapping & Story Mapping - An Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

This class will introduce you to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) through the fun and simple process of creating web maps that you will compile into a Story Map by the end of the course. You will learn the basic workings of ArcGIS Online, a free web-based platform from Esri, Inc. for creating, storing, and publishing maps and layers, conducting basic spatial analysis, and designing Story Maps. Don’t be intimidated – you do not need any prior knowledge or experience with GIS or web mapping for this course. Instructed by

Lauren Heerschap, who has taught nine years of GIS at the college level and has used GIS in a variety of settings for fifteen years. Lauren is enthusiastic about GIS, maps, and helping others become more geographically literate.

Lander’s Local Geology

The rocks and landscapes in and around Lander are spectacular to look at, but are you curious about how and when they formed? In this class, you will learn about big picture concepts such as plate tectonics and mountain building, basic rock and mineral identification, what landscapes can tell us about rock types, why natural resources such as oil & gas or metals are concentrated in certain areas, and a bit about the vast scale of geologic time. Field trips to Sinks Canyon and Johnny Behind the Rocks will help your new knowledge come alive and allow for hands-on fun in the field. Families are welcome on the field trips!
