MAHIKENG
Curro Academy Mahikeng cares about others
Curro Academy Mahikeng collected clothes, toys and food for the people of Groot Marico who
don’t have much. The school also collected water donations for the people of the Western Cape
who had no clean water to drink during the drought. Hopefully this contribution made a small
difference to some.

SANDOWN
Grade 1 learners were appointed to
be the pioneers of the recycling project and on 20 July 2018 the
first sheet of recycled paper was placed in the school recycling
container. The two Grade 1 classes marched out on the school
grounds early on this winter morning and learners could not
contain their excitement as they each pushed forward to make
their contribution.
This catalysed other projects in the school. As part of project-
based learning, Grade 5 learners presented their proposed
ideas for recycling contributing to society at the STEAMD expo
in Durbanville and the school decided to collect ecobricks
(plastic cold drink bottles filled with sand), a project which has
been embraced by learners, staff and parents alike with much
enthusiasm.
Grade 1 learners launching the project
It had only been a short six months since the school opened when they started a
social outreach project, which has been running successfully ever since. Seeing
its opening day in conjunction with Madiba’s 67 minutes, the ‘sandwich club’
spearheaded the social outreach programme for the school. Grade 1 learners
were the pilots for this initiative, being the first class to make sandwiches for
Peace Home in Parklands on 18 July. Every week a different class prepared and
delivered the sandwiches to the foster home.
Also in conjunction with Madiba’s 67 minutes, was a very successful clothing
drive for children and babies whereby parents and learners, as well as staff,
donated used clothing items and shoes to Peace Home – 67 minutes was spent
sorting the items into age groups to assist the foster home in allocating items to
the children. A heart-warming intake of huge piles of clothing gave witness to
the dedication and generosity which forms part of the personality of the Curro
Academy Sandown family.
