Loma Prieta’s Legacy – Stronger Infrastructure It only took fifteen seconds for the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake to cause an estimated $6 billion dollars in damages. This highlighted the need for prioritizing investments in seismic reliability. Our Water System Improvement Program, one of the largest infrastructure programs in the nation, has ensured that our Regional Water System is stronger today. This $4.8 billion dollar program, with a total of 83 projects, has strengthened and built redundancy into our infrastructure so that we can reliably provide water to our customers within 24 hours after a major earthquake.
