Loma Prieta’s Legacy – Stronger Infrastructure
It only took fifteen seconds for the 1989
Loma Prieta Earthquake to cause an
estimated $6 billion dollars in damages.
This highlighted the need for prioritizing
investments in seismic reliability. Our
Water System Improvement Program, one
of the largest infrastructure programs in the
nation, has ensured that our Regional Water
System is stronger today. This $4.8 billion
dollar program, with a total of 83 projects,
has strengthened and built redundancy into
our infrastructure so that we can reliably
provide water to our customers within 24
hours after a major earthquake.
