Gold Rush Spurs City ’ s First Sewer System
In the few years after the 1849 Gold Rush , San Francisco ’ s population swelled to 100,000 or more , and the thriving young port town needed a sewer system . The first — built from the 1860s through the ‘ 80s — consisted of about 150 miles of brick-lined pipes . About 25 miles of those original brick pipes are still in use today .
