A Digital Newsletter of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission MAY/JUNE 2018 Civic Centennial: 100 Years of Hydroelectric Power for San Francisco 2018 marks an exciting anniversary for us! We are celebrating 100 years that the city- owned and operated Hetch Hetchy System has supplied 100% greenhouse gas-free hydroelectric power to San Francisco. Beginning in 1918, the City started generating its own hydroelectric power at the Early Intake Powerhouse, which provided electricity for the construction of the O’Shaughnessy Dam in the Hetch Hetchy Valley. Since then, our hydroelectric power system has supplied clean power to multiple landmarks across the City; from the vivid, welcoming runway lights at SFO Airport to keeping Jillian the Sumatran tiger happy in her lair at the SF Zoo. In addition to hydroelectric power, the City invests in other clean energy sources, including rooftop solar arrays such as the ones displayed on City Hall. What will the next 100 years of clean power bring to the City? To start, we are launching the next enrollment of CleanPowerSF, which provides renewable energy (wind and solar) to residents and businesses. Help celebrate our anniversary this year by supporting our clean energy programs that reduce fossil-fuel use, improve air quality, and move our City toward a more sustainable future.
