COMBATING THE INTERNET SHOPPER

Oh , hardly anything will set any good retail salesperson or shop owner ’ s blood a-boiling like spending 30 or 40 minutes helping someone identify shoes and other lovely sundry items that will solve the myriad of problems they presented to us , have them inform us they would like to “ think about it ” ( never really a problem , I always want my customer to be happy with their purchase ), only to see them in the grocery store a week later sporting that same shoe and telling their friend how they saved a fortune by purchasing it online . If the temptation to grasp this insect about the neck and see if it rattles when you shake it has ever entered your mind , read on , my retail brethren , as I found some solutions that do not end in an invitation to take a free ride in a government vehicle to spend a little quality time with the residents of the local hoosegow . You don ’ t get to keep the shiny jewelry . Bummer .

First , to set the scene . Imagine , if you will , a quaint little shop , some 3000 square feet , in upstate New York . Two or three sales people working the floor , support staff and a pair of busy pedorthists doing their best to split time between making things in the lab , ordering , working the sales floor , marketing and seeing patients that were referred in by local physicians . You get the idea . Pretty much a typical pedorthic / retail facility . No rest for the wicked , as my grandmother used to
