May is designated as Older Americans Month and has been a time to celebrate the contributions of older adults since 1963. The North Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments (NARCOG), along with partner businesses, plan to celebrate older adults from across our three-county region at one signature event. Our three county Commission on Aging offices along with other partner organizations – The Cottages, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, CignaHealthspring, the Cook Museum and the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association and others are planning a morning of fun, fellowship and food. Those 60 and older are invited to join us to: GRANDPARENT CAREGIVER PROGRAM The number of grandparents raising grandchildren has grown to an estimated 2.5 million. These grandfamilies present unique challenges for older adults. So much that a new law, The Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act was passed just last July. The Grandparent Caregiver Program offered through NARCOG can provide information and assist in finding resources that can help these grandparents. Caring for a child under the age of 18 is a tremendous responsibility. The Grandparent program is designed to help caregivers manage their responsibilities while taking 52 | SUMMER 2019 care of themselves. The program is available for grandparents age 55 and older who are living with and providing primary care for an underage child or an adult child with severe disabilities. One phone call to NARCOG and we will assess your individual situation and connect you with resources. Some of the services grandparents may be eligible to receive include educational programs, respite and supplemental services. Limited funds are also available to assist in covering the cost of sporting activities, summer camp or school supplies for grandchildren. Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation. Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment. Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others. JOIN US!
