TeleStroke Program Provides Quality Stroke Care Locally 50 | SUMMER 2019 During a stroke, getting care quickly is essen- tial. That’s why Cullman Regional has launched an Emergency Tele-Stroke Program to cut the time between when the patient arrives in the ER and when the physicians determine a plan of care. “The best stroke care works to have the CT scan, consultation and decision on treatment within one hour of the time they hit the door,” said Cullman Regional Chief Medical Office William Smith, MD. Using a portable, high-defin tion video cam- era system known as a telestroke cart, Cullman Regional’s ER physicians along with the remote neurologist can determine the severity of the patient’s symptoms and whether to adminis- ter the tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, a powerful clot-dissolving medication that can greatly increase a stroke patient’s chances of survival if administered within about three hours of the fi st symptoms.
