PROJECT LIFESAVER INTERNATIONAL HELPS PROVIDE RAPID RESPONSE TO SAVE LIVES equipment, technology and procedures, as well as teaching rescuers how to communicate with people affl ted with cog- nitive conditions, all of which are essential to the successful rescue of missing persons who wander or otherwise become lost. They certify search and rescue personnel and provide on-going management to par- ticipating agencies. The task of searching for wandering or lost individuals is a growing and serious re- sponsibility. Without effective procedures and equipment, searches can involve multiple agencies, hundreds of offi- cers, countless man hours and thousands of dollars. More importantly, because time is of the essence, every minute lost increases the risk of a tragic outcome. Most who wander are typi- cally found within a few miles from home and search times have been reduced from hours and days to mere minutes.
