Scheduled Oct. 3-6, the festival heads into its 39th year and brings the area’s unique history into focus. Oktoberfest is simply all things German — and Cullman — and engages the community in both history and entertainment, with everything from the Chicken Dance, to German-style beer on tap. At the core of the festival is the the community’s founder, Col. John G. Cullmann. A political refugee from Germany, Cullmann came to the United States, eventually arriving in north Alabama. When he came across present-day Cullman County in 1873 he envisioned the area becoming the garden spot of America through the efforts of hard working German farmers and other skilled workers who had immigrated.
