GAME

" Game of the Year " is an arbitrary and meaningless idea , argues Samuel Gilzean . But what could replace it ?

The premise of

“ game of the year ” is shaky at best , not only because of the
overwhelmingly subjective nature of the entire concept , but also the fact that , generally , it serves merely as a marketing tool that
utterly negates the bewildering hardships
endured by the developers .
Of course , there are a smattering of positives around “ game of the year ”, but these seem few and far between when you consider the sheer unrelenting torrent of negativity that accompanies even the most
contemplative and informed of discussions . As with anything that ’ s noteworthy in the videogame industry , the whole thing becomes nothing more than a maelstrom of chaotic rhetoric and callous corporate agenda .
When you sit back , grab a glass of fine
bourbon and contemplate the concept of “ game of the year ”, you slowly begin to realise how abstract , subjective and ill-defined the entire idea is . At the end of the day , everyone , including major journalist publications and awards panels [ Ed : and us ],
has their own independent philosophy regarding what makes a game great or worthy of becoming game of the year .
