Pulling The Plug! We cannot deny the world we live in. Like it our not we have become a society that depends on electronic devices to connect us to the world and to each other. Every day we spend hours on computers, phones, tablets and play stations. We do this in the name of entertainment and communication. It is what it islimited. Camping together as a family gives us the chance to put our electronic devices into context. Sitting next to campfire while someone tells a story is simple but powerful. You can look into the eyes of each other, and see faces as they react. Real laughter is heard and shared and is much better than typing LOL. Being outdoors your family shares simple moments while listening to the sounds of woods. These sounds are not a recording or virtual reality rather they are life in real time. As adults too often we take nature for granted and that apathy can be transferred to our kids. Watching the sun set together a far greater bonding experience than watching a movie on the family channel. Family vacations are what memories are made of. The big trips to Disney and other marquee destinations certainly bring wonderful memories. However a simple camping adventure that everyone in the family can pitch in allows for greater interaction. Free of all distractions you have time for each other. All of your “stuff” will be there when you get home. Taking a weekend in the woods will give you a chance experience what is really mportant in your family’s lives. Benefits Of Family Camping Sleep better Tuning yourself to natural light resets your circadian rhythms. Research shows that when you follow the sun’s schedule the more likely you will go to bed and wake up at a reasonable time. The whole family will feel less groggy. A time for wonder Watching the stars or a sunset keeps us humble. It shows that there is more to the universe than us. Stopping and soaking in nature allows us to think, reflect and enjoy the wonder of the world we live in. Improve your mood Many studies have shown that a simple walk in the woods reduces depression and anger. The woods are healing. Spending time outdoors reduce rumination- the obsessive negative thinking that can lead to serious mental health issues. Burn stuff Not only can you burn wood for your campfire, when you are outside and moving you are burning calories. Fresh air helps fuel that fire. Get focused Constant texting and watching TV isn’t greatest thing you can do for your brain. Having the opportunity to slow down, being present and interactive, helps you and your kids focus. Give your screen a rest Increasingly we are becoming slaves to our screens. Turning them off for a while gives us the chance to build some real connections.
