SAFE KEEPING The Spirit Of Adventure Council is committed to the positive development of children and young adults. Nothing the council does is more important than maintaining the safety of youth and leaders that participate in our programs. In all of the planning and development that goes into the camp, most of the effort is keeping it safe. Every summer camp program is reviewed and certified by local regulatory agencies. An additional rigorous inspection is conducted by the Boy Scouts of America to ensure every child’s safety in our summer programs. All our Camp Directors and Program Directors must complete an intensive multi-day training programing. Before camp they must receive certification by the Boy Scouts of America’s National Camping School Day Camp Administration. Aquatics Directors at camps with water sports activities must successfully complete a weeklong training program in aquatic safety. Each camp has a Registered Nurse to handle any medical emergencies and provide routine care. Shooting Sports Directors require training and certification in range safety. To ensure the safety of all, local Health departments inspect each camp. Additionally a Boy Scouts of America camp inspection team vists the camps to verify all BSA health, safety and program standards are being followed. Our camps are staffed at a ratio of 1 staff member for 5 campers. The two-deep leadership rule assuring that no youth is ever alone with an adult is followed in all Scout programs. Staff members must complete and be certified for Youth Protection Training and Weather Hazards Training. They must also pass a Massachusetts CORI check, a national background check, and be registered members in good standing with the Boy Scouts of America.
