13 TH ONE DAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Shennecossett Golf Course Groton, Conn. October 14
E
EACH YEAR, the state’s top amateur golfers make
a final trip to Groton, Conn. for the season-ending
One Day Championship at Shennecossett Golf
Course. The 6,562 yard, par 71 Donald Ross layout is the
annual home of the Championship and a favorite spot on
the One Day schedule. Players earn the right to compete
in the final event by attaining a top-five finish in any of
the CSGA’s twelve One Day tournaments throughout the
season.
In the Tettelbach (under fifty-five years of
age) Division, Addison Owens of the Washington Club
recovered from a rocky start to claim medalist honors.
Owens racked up six birdies on the back nine for a score of
41-30-71 and a one shot victory over Richard Malafronte
of Hunter Golf Club. By match of cards Scott Emigh of
Fenwick Golf Club won the Net Division of the Tettelbach
Division with a score of 69 over Martin Santacroce of
Alling Memorial Golf Club, who also recorded a net score
of 69.
In the Siderowf (fifty-five years of age or older)
Division, Gene Cufone of Alling Memorial fired a twounder par 69 in a round that included four birdies and
two bogeys. At 71, two strokes behind Cafone and tied for
runner-up honors were Bill Torza of Wethersfield Country
Club and Reverend William Lee of the Golf Course at
Yale. For Rev. Lee, a 71 year-old three-time Connecticut
Amateur champion, the round marked yet another occasion
where the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame inductee shot
his age.
In the Net Division of the Siderowf, Joe Dancsak,
Sr. of Quarry Ridge Golf Course led the way with a
remarkable net score of 61, two better than James Ryder, Jr.
of Great Neck Country Club who fired 63.
The Connecticut State Golf Association thanks
all of the golf clubs who hosted tournaments this season,
and the golfers and volunteers who helped make 2014 a
record breaking year for participation in the CSGA One
Day Series Sponsored by Chris Cote’s Golf Shop.
