112 TH CONNECTICUT AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Lake of Isles North Stonington, Conn. June 16 - 20
HOUSE OF CARDS
Making his first appearance at the “final table”, Zach Zaback never folded and used his
impressive short game skills to capture the 112th Connecticut Amateur.
T
O QUOTE Jawaharlal Nehru, famed philosopher
and the first Prime Minister of India: “Life is
like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you is
determinism; the way you play it is free will.”
The same could be said about golf, especially
in a grueling format like the Connecticut Amateur
Championship, where the finalists play eight rounds of golf
in five days, including three-straight 36-hole days to finish. In
that span of golf, there’s no question that the final two players
will have endured their share of ups and downs.
One has to look no further than this year’s final of
Zach Zaback of TPC River Highlands and Kevin Josephson

of the Country Club of Farmington. Zaback reached the
final match by shear determination; standing on the 10th tee
of his semifinal match, he was 3-down to Branden Chicorka,
and engineered an improbable comeback that resulted in a
victory on the 21st hole.
For Josephson, who was twice the R.M. Grant
Medalist but had never advanced past the Round of 16, it
was a test of endurance. Two of his four matches were won on
the 20th and 21st holes, while the other two were decided on
the 17th, and entering the final match, he had played a total
of 111 holes in just four days.
