Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast High on the bucket list for visitors to Europe is picturesque Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento overlooks the Bay of Naples in southern Italy and is a popular, but expensive tourist destination reached easily from Naples. The Amalfi Drive, connecting Sorrento and Amalfi, is a narrow road that threads along the high cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ferries and hydrofoils connect the town to Naples, Amalfi, Positano and Capri. Between Naples and Sorrento are Mount Vesuvius and the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Limoncello, a digestif made from lemon rinds, alcohol, water and sugar, is produced in Sorrento and grown throughout the Amalfi Coast. A special way to visit is by small ships which can anchor off the Sorrento foreshore. Our cruise on Aegean Odyssey spent two nights off Sorrento which allowed plenty of time to go ashore and explore. Whilst there another visiting ship was Christina O, a private motor yacht that once belonged to billionaire Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis. www.worldwidecruisecentres.com.au 31
