I've always been attracted to sparkly things. Anything that glows, illuminates the sky, or explodes with bursts of color like the fourth of July...can capture my heart in an instant.

There's something unspeakably enchanting about light shining in the darkness. Whether it's a tiny Christmas candle in a windowsill silently offering warm hope in the cold winter, or an army of pink and white candles joyfully clapping their glowing orange hands on top a birthday cake. Fire has always captivated me.

Why is it that I can sit out under the stars for hours, huddled around a crackling summer camp fire? I gaze into the black blanket of endless expansion above. I attempt to count the vast number of mind-bursting fire balls that are racing through the galaxy at breakneck speeds, and gasp when a a shooting star makes her dazzling appearance.

I look like a wide-eyed three year old, experiencing the wonder of holding a sparkler for the first time, attempting to write my name in the air, as an ember glow leaves a trail of magic.

Why am I so obsessed with light? Strobe lights, Christmas lights, lava lamps, fireflies, glow sticks…if I could, I could capture anything that glows and puts it in a jar. Perhaps my intrinsic obsession with bright and shiny things have to do with the way I was created. Or more directly than that, by Whom I was created.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

When we flip back through the pages of history, and recall the first thing our Creator ever spoke over this planet, we discover why we are so drawn to the light. God said, “Let there be light.” Without light there would only be darkness, and without the light, we would be without hope.
