Crisis in the Congo 1 | Page 7

I believe that the Congo has hope, but needs to pursue it. The United States should help them. If the United States could make the Rwandans into a strong organized military, why couldn’t they do the same for the Congolese? Why not give the Congo a chance? If the Congo could actually defend itself they could have a fighting chance. However, that’s a dangerous way to do things. Who wants more death in that country? They have seen too much of it. I think the Congo could try to make a treaty that benefits all the parties. As an incentive to stop fighting for wealth, they could write a treaty that would give the rebel militias untaxed mining operations. Although they would have to share the wealth, it could stop the fighting. What’s that worth? Perhaps then the Congo could rebuild itself and flourish. Then the rest of the world would have to agree to buy Fair Trade minerals, as we do with coffee, so the mining operations are not slave camps, but real businesses.
