The second Congo war (also referred to as the Great War of Africa) started in 1998 and officially ended in 2003. Since the fighting started 5.4 million people in the Congo died. After the war Congo was declared the rape capital of the world because of how often rape was used as a weapon during the war. Women were targeted most during this time. The war started when the president of the country who had been the president for over ten years and was becoming more of a dictator, and the citizens of the country wanted him out. The war started right around the time people started trying to take the dictators control away. Even after the war ended in 2003 a new wave of violence took place in 2012 when rebel soldiers formed a group of militia and tried to fight the Congo government
