Teen Living ( Principles of Family and Human Services ) Grade 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 1 Unit Prerequisite : None Students learn core functions of the human services field ; individual , family , and community systems ; and life literacy skills for human development . Emphasis is placed on professional skills , human ecology , diversity , analyzing community issues , and life management skills . Activities engage students in exploring various helping professions , while building essential life skills they can apply in their own lives to achieve optimal wellbeing . English / language arts , social studies , mathematics , science , technology , interpersonal relationships are reinforced .
Foods I Grades 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 1 Unit Prerequisite : Teen Living ( Principles of Family and Human Services recommended This course examines the nutritional needs of the individual . Emphasis is placed on the relationship of diet to health , kitchen and meal management , food preparation and sustainability for a global society , and time and resource management . English language arts , mathematics , science and social studies are reinforced . Apprenticeship and cooperative education are not available for this course . Family , Career and Community Leaders of America ( FCCLA ) competitive events , community service and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences .
Foods II - Enterprise Grades 11 , 12 1 Unit Prerequisite : Foods I This course focuses on advanced food preparation techniques while applying nutrition , food science and test kitchen concepts using new technology . Food safety and sanitation receive special emphasis with students taking the exam for a nationally recognized food safety credential . Students develop skills in preparing foods such as beverages , salads and dressings , yeast breads and cake fillings and frostings . A real or simulated in-school food business component allows students to apply instructional strategies . English language arts , mathematics and science are reinforced . Family , Career and Community Leaders of America ( FCCLA ) competitive events , community service and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences .
Earn Free College Credit By Taking CTE Classes
Courses listed below articulate with Cleveland Community College and possibly other NC community colleges if students receive a grade of B or higher in the course and score “ 90 or higher “ on the CTE end of course exam / or receive an industry recognized credential from an approved certification organization . Articulation equates to earning college credit upon entering the community college system .
