AGRICULTURE EDUCATION
Agriscience Applications
Grade 9

Prerequisite : None
This course focuses on integrating biological / physical sciences with technology as related to the environment , natural resources , food production , science and
agribusiness . Topics of instruction include agriculture awareness and literacy , leadership and FFA , employability skills and introduction to all aspects of the total
agricultural industry . English , language arts , mathematics and science are reinforced . FFA activities provide the opportunity to apply workplace readiness skills
through authentic experience .
Animal Science I
Grades 10 , 11

Prerequisite : Agriscience Applications recommended
This course focuses on the basic scientific principles and processes that are involved in animal physiology , breeding , nutrition and care in preparation for an animal
science career major . Topics include animal diseases , introduction to animal science , animal nutrition , animal science issues , career opportunities and animal
evaluation . English language arts , mathematics and science are reinforced . FFA activities provide the opportunity to apply workplace readiness skills through
authentic experiences .
Honors Animal Science II *
Grades 11 , 12

Prerequisite : Animal Science I
This course advances scientific principles and communication skills that were begun in Animal Science I . Topics include animal waste management , animal science
economics , decision-making , global concerns in the industry , genetics and breeding . English language arts , mathematics and science are reinforced . FFA activities
provide the opportunity to apply workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences .
Animal Science II-Small Animal *
Grades 11 , 12

Prerequisite : Animal Science I
This course provides instruction on animal science topics related to small animals that are served by a veterinarian . Content related to the breeding , grooming , care
and marketing of animals that fit into this category is taught in this class . English language arts , mathematics and science are reinforced . FFA activities provide the
opportunity to apply workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences .
Veterinary Assisting Honors Grades 11 , 12 1 Unit Prerequisite : Animal Science II ( preferably Small Animals ). This class is designed for seniors with an interest in animal medicine . This course provides instruction for students desiring a career in animal medicine . Topics include proper veterinary practice management and client relations , pharmacy and laboratory procedures , enhancement of animal care learned in previous animal courses , and surgical / radiological procedures . Advanced FFA leadership will be infused throughout the curriculum to develop the student ’ s ability to work with the public . All aspects of this course will have hands-on skill sets that will be enforced with 200 hours working in animal medicine throughout all animal courses in high school . Applied mathematics , science , writing and skill sets are integrated throughout the curriculum . Students will learn the material in order to be prepared for the Veterinary Assisting exam developed by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America . With successful completion of the exam , students will become an approved Veterinary Assistant and be recognized with an AVA designation .
Horticulture I
Grades 10 , 11

This course provides instruction on the broad field of horticulture with emphasis on the scientific and technical knowledge for a career in horticulture . Topics in this
course include plant growth and development , plant nutrition , media selection , basic plant identification , pest management , chemical disposal , customer relations ,
career opportunities and leadership development . English language arts , mathematics and science are reinforced .
Honors Horticulture II * Grades 11 , 12 1 Unit Prerequisite : Horticulture I This course covers instruction that expands the scientific knowledge and skills to include more advanced scientific computations and communication skills needed in the horticulture industry . Topics include greenhouse plant production and management , bedding plant production and management , watering systems , light effects , basic landscape design , installation and management , lawn and turf grass management , career planning and leadership / personal development . Skills in biology , chemistry and algebra are reinforced in this class . Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are agriscience projects , cooperative education , apprenticeships and supervised agricultural experiences . Supervised agriculture experience programs and FFA leadership activities are integral components of the course and provide many opportunities for practical application of instructional competencies .
Biotechnology & Agriscience Research I
Grades 11 , 12

Prerequisite : Biology & Chemistry Highly Recommended
This course provides instruction in the technologically advanced world of agriculture and life sciences . Students are exposed to the latest techniques and advances in
plant and animal biotechnology with a strong emphasis on hands-on activities . English , mathematics , and science are reinforced . Work-based learning experiences
are integrated throughout this course to bring the scientific information to students for real-life application . This course requires that students have a strong aptitude
in science .
