This course is required for graduation . World History is the chronological study of the recorded history of mankind . This course includes an
overview of the various cultures and religions of the world . Also , students will engage in an intensive study of the specific events and eras that
have shaped the course of the modern world .
Honors World History Grade 9 1 Unit Prerequisite : A / B in 8 th grade Honors Language Arts and / or Honors Social Studies , teacher recommendation This course provides the opportunity for advanced work , rigorous study and systematic study of major ideas and concepts found in the study of global history . This course is challenging and requires students to take greater responsibility for their learning by participating in problem-seeking , problem-solving , scholarly and creative processes , critical analysis and application , and reflective thinking . Although the goals and objectives are the same as those found in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study ( NCSCS ), the material is taught with greater complexity and reflects a differentiated curriculum . The application of the themes of geography and an analysis of the cultural traits of civilizations will help students understand how people shape their world and how their world shapes them . As students examine the historical roots of significant events , ideas , movements , and phenomena , they encounter the contributions and patterns of living in civilizations around the world . Students broaden their historical perspectives as they explore ways societies have dealt with continuity and change , exemplified by issues such as war and peace , internal stability and strife and the development of institutions .
American History I Grade 11 1 Unit Prerequisite : World History American History I : The Founding Principles survey course will begin with the European exploration of the new world through Reconstruction . Students will examine the historical and intellectual origins of the United States from European exploration and colonial settlement to the Revolutionary and Constitutional eras . Students will learn about the important political and economic factors that contributed to the development of colonial America and the outbreak of the American Revolution as well as the consequences of the Revolution , including the writing and key ideas of the U . S . Constitution . American History I : The Founding Principles will guide students as they study the establishment of political parties , America ’ s westward expansion , the growth of sectional conflict , how that sectional conflict led to the Civil War , and the consequences of the Civil War , including Reconstruction .

Teaching the same curriculum as the standard American History course , the honors course builds and extends on those same historical concepts as well as the social , economic , political and world events and topics from exploration to reconstruction . Students will be expected to read and / or interact to a wide spectrum of more challenging , relevant instructional material .
American History II Grade 11 1 Unit Prerequisite : American History I American History II : The Founding Principles will guide students from the late nineteenth century time period through the early 21 st century . Students will examine the political , economic , social and cultural development of the United States from the end of the Reconstruction era to present times . The essential standards of American History II : The Founding Principles will trace the change in the ethnic composition of American society ; the movement toward equal rights for racial minorities and women ; and the role of the United States as a major world power . An emphasis is placed on the expanding role of the federal government and federal courts as well as the continuing tension between the individual and the state . The desired outcome of this course is for students to develop an understanding of the cause-and-effect relationship between past and present events , recognize patterns of interactions , and understand the impact of events on in the United States in an interconnected world .
