Honors Pre AP English III Grade 11 ( Fall ) 1 Unit Prerequisite : Level 4 or higher on English II EOC ; Grade of “ B ” or higher in English II Honors , teacher recommendation This course takes students on a journey through some of the most exciting major works in American literature . It begins with a look at the earliest American literature given to us by the Pilgrims and Puritans and continues on through the development of American short stories , novels , plays , poems , and essays . Since this course is highly recommended for anyone considering AP Language and Composition as an option for the spring semester , the writing assignments and readings are tailored to build a foundation for that course . A wide variety of major authors and selections will be read with the focus on understanding the craft of writing as the authors have shaped it while borrowing from their styles to enrich students ’ personal writing .
AP Language and Composition Grade 11 ( Spring ) 1 Unit Prerequisite : Pre AP English III This is a course for college bound students that will teach them to become better readers and writers . Approved by and taught from a syllabus approved by the College Board , it is designed and taught at a college level . The goal is to provide students with a course that could substitute for one semester of freshman English in college . Students will take the AP exam in the spring and , depending upon their scores , may be awarded college credit for taking this course . Reading , discussion and writing are key elements . Classes are lively and debate is encouraged . Reading incorporates short pieces of prose by major authors . Writing is developed through individual conferencing to assist students in developing a personal “ voice .” Students should leave this course as proficient writers capable of handling the challenges of the college essay .

This course focuses on British literature and is designed to help students develop the ability to use the English language to create the kinds of
written and oral expressions they will use in college and at work . Emphasis is placed on the student using critical thinking skills to become an active
learner .
Honors English IV Grade 12 1 Unit Prerequisite : Grade of “ B ” or higher in English III , teacher recommendation Students in English IV Honors will integrate all the language arts skills gained throughout their education . The curriculum both affirms these skills and equips the student to be life-long learners . Students continue to explore expressive , expository , argumentative and literary contexts with a focus on British literature . The emphasis in English IV is on argumentation by developing a position of advocacy through reading , writing , speaking , listening and using media . Students will express reflections and reactions to texts and explain principles inspired by the curriculum . The student will interpret and qualify texts and research and address issues of public or personal concern . The student will create products and presentations which maintain standard conventions of the written and spoken language .

Employing a format seminar , students will learn to become active learners . Areas of emphasis in this course will include reading comprehension and literary analysis similar to what students will be required to know and use in a college literature course .

Prerequisite : Pre AP English IV Honors
Designed to prepare students for the AP test , this course provides a concentrated study of British literary works . It will include a specific number of
literary works for detailed study and writing in the AP format . It will also contain activities in grammar and usage , reading for interpretation and
comprehension , and the use of critical thinking skills . The major tests will follow the format of the AP exam , which is given in the spring . College
credit will be earned for satisfactory performance on this exam .
Alternative English I

Prerequisite : Department Approval
Emphasis on reading comprehension , strategies to comprehend texts , knowledge of literary elements , development of composition skills , including
editing and grammar and application of research tools and techniques . Students will become media savvy by analyzing appeals , recognizing reliable
internet sources , and internet safety .
Alternative English II Grade 10 1 Unit Prerequisite : Alternative English I and Department Approval Emphasis on developing fluency , flexibility , and control in reading and writing . World literature is studied . Forms of writing are expository , descriptive , persuasive and narrative . Cause and effect relationships will be examined . Students will learn research skills , conduct research on a global topic , and pull together information and present findings .
