species such as the Brazil-nut tree.
The interactions between orchid
bees and the plants they visit are
of great ecological importance,
helping to maintain
forest function5.
Male orchid bees use brushes on
their forelimbs to collect fragrances
from the plants they visit, which
they then store in the spongy tissue
of their enlarged hind legs3. The

fragrance

attract many
male orchid
bees to the
area, and they can then be
easily observed collecting the
fragrance, or caught using a
hand net 7-9 . These bees are most
active during the morning, and
in our experience, the best time
to sample them is between
8am and 2pm.
