“I don’t know enough about other clubs but I feel very honored to be a part of it. I feel honored to be a part of high school students who are willing to sacrifice for other people. It has a great service component, community feel, and I love how there are clubs to offer to students who find different interests have a place at silver creek where they feel happy, home, and a sense of community.”

Nerd Culture Club

Are you a nerd? Do you question if Han Solo or Greedo shot first? Finally, High School has a place where you’ll fit in. Nerd Culture Club meets every corner of the “nerd world” where you get to learn more about anime, movies and TV shows, and everything pop culture may involve. Led by Mr. DeFilippo, the Nerd Culture Club gathers every other Thursday after school in room D200 to discuss any new pop culture discoveries or interests they may have. Different than what old movies may depict, those interested in Nerd Culture are not that different than you may think. Everyone and anyone is welcome to join or visit the club to envelope themselves into the welcoming world that is Nerd Culture Club. After asking Mr. D a few questions, we got a better understanding on what this club means to him.

What’s your favorite memory from the club?

“My favorite memory from Nerd Culture Club is watching Ponyo at our end of the year celebration last year”

Why is this club important to Silver Creek?

“The club is important to Silver Creek because it allows students who might not necessarily fit in anywhere else and it’s a place where they will feel welcomed and talk about their shared love of anime or anything else nerdy and cool TV shows without fear of being called ‘uncool’ for liking that kind of thing. It is just a place where people can come together and celebrate the weird nerdy things that make their life more enjoyable.”

How is it different from other clubs?

“It’s different than other clubs because it focuses alot on pop culture, we look at anime a lot. But not just anime, any other pieces of media that develop the kind of cult or nerd following. Shows such as Sherlock, Avatar The Last Airbender, and anything that really falls in that range of nerdiness, which is becoming more and more mainstream with all of the new Marvel movies, DC movies, superheroes, all that kind of stuff. It really allows us to look at that, as it influences our culture, but also celebrate why those different pieces of media are important.”
