Illustration Judge’s Thoughts Matthew Loffhagen “Judging this competition has been incredibly difficult. There have been so many wonderful, creative and inspiring pieces submitted for this contest, and narrowing down the list to just fifteen was absolutely heart-breaking! I am humbled and inspired by the quality of all the entries, and I have to offer my congratulations to those included in this book – in your art, I saw something special. You have a talent, and I encourage you to push your art further, to see what wonderful things you can create. I would like to also recognise those whose entries are not in this book. Your art was beautiful, and I’m very grateful that you shared it. Please continue to illustrate, because I saw something special in your art as well. I firmly believe that any young artist who entered this competition has the potential to become a fantastic, world renowned artist. So to everyone who entered the competition, please take my advice and never stop drawing. If you work at it, if you practice every day, you have the potential to become even more incredible than you already are.” The Great Wall Global Classroom Creative Writing Anthology 2015 Matthew Loffhagen Matthew Loffhagen is an award-winning illustrator specialising in cartoons, comics and bright, fun artwork. He started drawing when he was very young, began working as a professional artist in 2012 and now has an impressive portfolio of clients. ‘I decided to draw this picture because the Great Wall has a long history made over hundreds of years. Its length so long, yet it is still undiscovered. It is a feat that even in modern times would require a lot of energy.’ Illustration by Timothy Ong, Year 6, British School of Washington 8 9
