“It seemed silly to have a name like Kiwicakes
and not actually supply a range of cakes,”
-SANDRA BOSTON, KIWICAKES
A
Kamo store is branching out from the world of
cake decorating to offer mid-range pre-decorated
cakes, ideal for birthdays and workplace shouts.
Kiwi Cakes in Grant Street have
recently expanded their offerings
to cater to an influx of customers
wanting affordable cakes for
events.
Owner Sandra Boston says her
customers highlighted a gap in
the market.
“There are some amazing cake
decorators out there, who can
do multi-level, intricate designs,”
she says. “But that takes time,
therefore costs money. The only
other alternative was a standard
supermarket cake which wasn’t
all that pretty.”
Kiwi Cake customers asked
Sandra if she could supply a
simple cake.
“It seemed silly to have a name
like Kiwi Cakes and not actually
supply a range of cakes,” she
says.
The NZ-made range of cakes are
created from actual ingredients
as opposed to cake mix. My
husband reckons the banana
cakes tastes like his mums’
baking from the Edmond’s
cookbook.”
The cakes are then iced in-
store and can include a range of
edible images. Kiwi Cakes hold
one of only three licenses in New
Zealand to print copyrighted
Disney images for cakes and
cupcakes.
“Because they are printed
right here in Kamo, you can be
guaranteed the colours will be
bright, and images clear,” says
Sandra.
Kiwi Cakes first started as an
online business operating from
Sandra’s mum’s garage.
11 years ago, Sandra struggled
to find supplies to make birthday
cakes for her children. She sold
a few tins at a profit and ventured
into the world of online trading.
“It wasn’t all that common to
have an e-commerce website
back then,” she says. “In fact
my original web designer, Donna
Russell [e-Builders] still manages
the site to this day.”
The team moved into their Grant
St premises five years ago.
“We eventually outgrew Mum’s
garage,” says Sandra.
Kiwi Cakes offer a range of cake
decorating supplies as well as
frozen pre-decorated cakes
ranging in price from $49, Sandra
also has a number of contacts
to make more intricate cake
designs. For more information
