Crazitive African Magazine Issue 9: Body Shaming | Page 2

BODY Shaming X It is no longer news that over 60% of fat, big, plus size women go into depression, become anorexic and have suicidal thoughts every year around the world because of the rejection, mockery, shame, neglect and other bad things that comes with the fact that they are fat and plus sized. It is called BODY SHAMING. This is the act of humiliating someone by making mockery or critical comments about their body shape or size. All of this hatred because of fat and cellulites. All this shaming because the world has an ideology and size as to what sexy should be. All the neglect because someone does not fit into a particular cloth size. Stores marginalize them. They go around with low self esteem, walk around with no confidence, seeking acceptance from the people of the earth. 'You're too fat', 'Go on a diet', 'What were you looking at till you got this fat', 'Watch your weight', 'Orobo', 'Fat ass', all this and many more are said to shame and demoralize these people. Some even use deadly stares and facial expressions to kill some plus sized people internally. Due to all this shaming by imperfect people, these fat people are forced to put themselves in a shell, they are depressed, they become anorexic, starve themselves day in day out just to look and appear as 'PERFECT' before the world. Damn! Some even go to the extent of committing suicide. The thing is that all of these people bodyshaming are not even perfect, most of them are just out to make people feel inferior, most of them are out to make people sad because they (body shamers) are sad so why believe and confine yourself to what an ordinary human being thinks or says? Why become sad and depressed because of indecisive and imperfect people? Stop comparing yourself to surgically enhanced people, stop comparing yourself to photoshopped bodies, stop comparing yourself to women who have insecurities of their own. Embrace yourselves, your fat, your cellulites, your flabs, your rolls and be happy. Remember that you don't need to lose weight in order to have a 'bikini body', you don't need to lose weight to be worthy of respect and love. Another woman's beauty does not mean the absence of your own. To be beautiful means to be yourself, not a replica of your favorite celebrities. Be happy and live unapologetically, don't forget that You Only Live Once (YOLO). Olakiiitan
