Cranbrook Educational Community – Director of Schools – Position Statement 9
between classes allows students to travel by bus or foot between the two campuses , connect with teachers and fellow students , or just relax in the common room or Kingswood Café . The Upper School schedule is a blend of traditional fixedperiod classes and a rotating schedule with class periods of varying lengths that optimize the learning environment .
The Upper School curriculum is rich , rigorous , and college preparatory in nature with Advanced Placement offerings in most of the content areas . Students are challenged inside and outside the classroom to develop independence , individuality and problem-solving skills . As a result of the architecture and lay-out of the two campuses , the ambiance is that of a small liberal arts college in which students are given considerable independence and handle it with maturity . With so many students and teachers living on one campus or the other , the Upper School is remarkably relational and the bonds among students and between students and teachers are strong and palpable . Upper School faculty serve as advisors , mentors and coaches and know their students both inside and outside of the classroom .
