Mint & Lemon Verbena, Honeysuckle & Peppercorn, Spiced Demerara, Oleo Saccharum Syrup – $14.00 Cocktail & Sons Award-winning New Orleans bartender and friend of CRAFT, Max Messier has leapt from the bartop into the home with a new line of artisanal syrups. Messier’s been experimenting with exotic combinations for years, and Cocktail & Sons, which launched in January, offers four fantastic flavors as innovative as anything we’ve come across. Oleo saccharum, a long-forgotten foundation for any great punch, is a subtly sweet syrup with virtually infinite applications. Messier’s Spiced Demerara has a spectacular finish reminiscent of holiday gingersnaps, and Honeysuckle Peppercorn the oozy sweetness of honeycomb. But what really starred here was the Mint & Lemon Verbena. There are flavors that require combinations so exacting that only true masters can achieve them. Let’s call them “gestalt” flavors.
