Catoctin Creek Tasting Notes with Becky
Mosby’s Grain Spirits
Un-aged whiskey, really small-scale
product, only made a couple times a year
right now. What’s cool about it is that it’s
whiskey without the wood flavors. Un-
aged whiskey is so often so harsh, this
one is really smooth. The nose is almost
like agave, then you get tropical fruits on
the front end, and it’s broad with bread
in the middle and spice at the end. Really
lovely, clean, clear. I’m proud of it.
Roundstone Rye
That’s our flagship product and our
biggest seller at 80 proof. We have some
others that have a higher proof, but this is
a classic. It’s like a front porch sipper of a
rye. So many people talk about cocktails
with rye—to me they don’t appeal to me
if they’re not in a cocktail. This is very
sip-able. Fruit notes on the mid-palette,
a nice, easy drinking whiskey. I like it for
simple cocktails like the Old Fashioned.
Watershed Gin
When we started we really wanted a gin,
and I love our gin. It’s a modern style
gin, but neither fish nor fowl. The juniper
quickly dissolves into a botanical sweet-
ness even though there’s not sugar in it.
I love Negronis, and this will stand up to
it but also taste really good in a gin and
tonic. It’s 92 proof and has some rye spici-
ness on the back.
