James Beard Award Winner Best Chef: Southeast, 2011, Andrea Reusing’s place The Lantern. We’re friends, so I am unashamed to say they are the shit. Mothers and Sons Trattoria is a new Italian place. It is delicious. I want to say surprising, but it should not really be surprising to find an amazing restaurant in a place like Durham or in any city. But Durham is home to lots of food places and bakeries for such a small place. It’s pretty concentrated. Asheville breweries get loads of press, but Durham is home to one of our favorite brew- ers, Fullsteam. What local brewers do you think CRAFT readers should know about? Oh, I love Fullsteam. I’m also into local cider; not sweet- super dry [Though Sam didn’t call them out— check out Black Twig Cider House and Bull City Ci- derworks the next time you’re in Raleigh-Durham]. Durham is full of serious foodies here that are taking it all in. It is fun to watch people our age to take up things we understand like cider or food, but then… to take it a little further is so cool. They find their own identities here; whether in craft or politics. It’s a won- der.
