"2020 is not only

dedicated to survivors ...

but to surviving!!"

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

Passion led us here ...

Radon Action Month is here—but every month should be radon action month! Since 2013, Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction (CR3) has been educating others about the danger of living, working, or attending school in environ-ments with elevated levels of radioactive radon gas. Most people including doctors, nurses, legislators, school administrators, neighbors, family members, home buyers, bankers, community leaders, and the general public are unaware of this invisible demon; and we work

to improve awareness, acceptance, and action against this silent killer. After my husband’s death in February 2006, I prayed to God to give me a reason to live. My prayer was answered rapidly when I discovered that radon was likely the cause of Joe’s death from lung cancer on February 8. Yes, I am aware that radon kills—maybe more so than most people—but we at CR3 strive to give hope, information, and methods of prevention for radioactive radon exposure to others.

Since CR3 was established, we have grown to include nearly 50 members with representatives in 20 states. Many of our members are lung cancer survivors or have a relative that has been affected by radon-induced lung cancer; and they want to make a difference. You can read comments from some of them in this issue.

Our free international electronic “CR3 Radon News” magazine has a circulation of approxi-mately 13,000 subscribers including the

medical communities, health care professionals, scientific groups, lung cancer organization, and industry professionals. In our magazine we share the latest information concerning lung cancer research and treatment, personal stories concerning radon and lung cancer, and relevant information on radon in our environment which is affecting our lives and the lives of our children throughout our world. We highlight respected oncologists and researchers on their studies, findings, and suggestions for lung cancer patients and for the awareness of radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer.

All of our members and representatives are encouraged to join the Comprehensive Cancer Control Programs in their states. We have individuals on the PA Cancer Control Board and the Iowa, Tennessee, and Illinois coalitions. This is a great tool for sharing the knowledge of the danger of radon and networking with other groups. Several of our members have been elected to the national board of AmericanAssociation of Radon Scientists and Technologists; and joining others at special events, members of CR3 advocate on the national, state, and local level for radon awareness and reduction. As a 501c3 nonprofit organization, we partner with groups such as Lung Cancer Connection, Breath of Hope, and Lung Force in order to share our message. Offering radon awareness events in our local communities in the month of January and throughout the year, we distribute low-cost radon test kits.

Some of us have made presentations to public health college students and their professors about the importance of testing for radon in homes, schools, and workplaces with mitigation if needed. For a few years participating in the Lung Cancer Awareness Event on November 1 at the National Press Club in DC gave us an opportunity to share our stories with others in the lung cancer community. We have exhibited at national conferences such as APHA, NEHA, ASHI, and the International Radon Symposium. One of our goals is to get copies of “Reducing the Risk from Radon: Information and Interventions A Guide for Health Care Providers to medical facilities and cancer centers, and family physicians. We have distributed approximately 2,000 and will continue with this mission.

Our current and newest initiative is introducing our Teachers for Radon Reduction Campaign with the pilot project beginning in Pennsylvania which includes a unified effort through the cooperation and collaboration of organizations such as Women for Healthy Environment, Environmental Health Project, PA Comprehensive Cancer Coalition and PA AARST chapter. We plan to spark the awareness of radon with our “Bark Side of Radon” flyers to schools and animal hospitals across the nation. Sponsorship for financial support for schools to be tested—money for test kits and training of school personnel—is certainly a critical element of this success; and we would appreciate your commitment to join and assist us with this effort.

That is who we are and what we do. Won’t you please join us!

One last word, Thank you to all of our members and representatives and sponsors.
