CR3 News Magazine 2020 VOL 1: JANUARY National Radon Action Month | Page 14

The radon mitigation world received exciting news this summer. Fresh air expert Fantech partnered with high-performance radon technology leader Radon Environmental (REM) to bring forward an ideal indoor air quality solution. Think: the dilution solution.

The HERO Series, Fantech’s HRV line, balances whole house ventilation while recovering the energy during air exchange. When coupled with REM’s Radostat on-demand mitigation, activating to keep radon levels below 2.7

pCi/L (or 100Bq/m3, the World Health Organization reference level), the combined product is a synergistic system that doesn’t sacrifice radon protection for energy-efficiency.

WHY THIS SAFE AIR SOLUTION NOW?

We’re building our new homes tighter and tighterfor energy-efficiency. Ventilation rates in new dwellings can be as low as 0.5 air changes per hour. What this means is we’re trapping harmful toxins in with us, like mold, VOCs, pollen, and the radioactive gas radon. It’s the rise of sick home syndrome where studies are finding indoor air pollution anywhere between five and ten times worse than outdoor air. Add to that, we’re spending upwards of 85 percent of our time indoors. What’s the solution? Fresh air, energy recovery of heat, and system activation to keep radon peaks below recognized health authority guidelines. It is possible to have

it all.

HOW DID THE TWO superHEROes MEET?

We talked with REM’s Director of Sales

David Innesto.

David, could you tell us how the partnership between REM and Fantech came about?

David: We were searching for a ‘fresh air’ partner that could make use of the Radostat technology to mitigate radon in air levels. Fantech was a logical partner given their commitment to energy efficiency and high-performance products like the HERO line. The ECM version is extremely energy efficient and delivers high performance ventilation.

Specifically, how does Radostat integrate with the HERO?

David: The Radostat is an indoor air quality sensor/controller that constantly measures the radon peaks in a room. The dry contact on the Radostat connects to the high-speed override contacts on the HERO HRV. When the Radostat detects a peak of 4.0pCi/L it turns on the HERO on high speed for 20 minutes (or until the level is below 4.0pCi/L). The Radostat is a smart device and, once it has 30 days of reads, will activate at peaks lower than 4.0 pCi/L based on the average of the 30 days of reads. When a Radostat is used with a HERO, the HERO is balanced so that it is bringing in 10% more air then it is taking out thus positively pressurizing the room to stop the ingress of radon.

What is the technology behind these products that makes this a high-performance system?

David: Using the Radostat with the HERO means that the homeowner has an on-demand radon mitigation system versus having to run the HRV on continuous mode as has been the tradition. Using the EC version of the HERO means energy consumption through the system is greatly minimized.

Healthy indoor air is critical. Yet we all want to save costs. What kind of energy savingsare typical when HERO is combined with Radostat?

D: Using the EC HERO with the Radostat will deliver savings similar to those realized by moving from incandescent light bulbs to LED bulbs!

Is this just for the home or are there fits for this technology in other environments? I’m thinking of classrooms where research is mounting for increased student performance when learning facilities have exposure to fresh air.

D: The Radostat can be used in conjunction with the Fantech line of commercial HRVs and ventilation systems to ensure safe work and study environments.

Are there any future developments for the partnership planned?

D: Please stay tuned as we are working on several exciting new announcements related to the expansion of this great partnership coming in 2020.

It sounds like interesting approaches are merging to mitigate radon and other indoor air pollutants across the board for all types of dwellings – workplaces and schools included. It’s a prime time for innovation in the radon industry.
