He remained with the Coquitlam-based company until his retirement in 1989. Prior to his work with Johnston Floor, Al worked as a clerk with Monarch Life Assurance, held bookkeeping roles with Arnett Manufacturing and Willy’s Auto Distributors, and served as a branch accountant with H.K. Porter Company. Al was very active in the construction industry throughout his career, holding leadership roles on the boards of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association, the BC Construction Association, and the Canadian Construction Association. He also served in the community as president of the YMCA in South Vancouver and was a member of the YMCA Board of Governors for 17 years. His service was later recognized with a YMCA life membership. Al was highly active in the accounting profession as well, with volunteer service spanning more than 20 years. He served as treasurer of the Vancouver Chapter for the Certified Management Accountants Society of BC (CMABC), served on CMABC’s Provincial Council in the early 1970s and early 1980s, and was a member of the Memorial Scholarship Committee and the Scholarship Fund Trustees. He also served on a number of other boards and committees at the provincial and national level. His significant contributions were recognized first in 1998, with a Life Membership award, and again in 2007, with CMA Canada’s highest honour, the FCMA designation. When he left Finning in 1981, it was to serve as CEO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia (ICABC), a role he held until his retirement in 1990. Ron was passionate about the accounting profession and held leadership roles on provincial and national committees throughout his career. Notably, his service on a national accounting research committee in the 1970s (including as the first chair from industry) contributed significantly to the development of Canadian and international accounting standards. He was elected to the BC Fellowship in 1977. Ron also volunteered on the ICABC council, becoming its president in 1980. That same year marked the beginning of 12 years of service on the Auditor General’s Advisory Council.
