Cowes Harbour Handbook 2019-2020 2019-2020 - Page 4

WELCOME HARBOUR MASTER’S WELCOME NICK EDWARDS Harbour Master Stuart McIntosh left, with deputies Ed Walker, centre and Jon Howden, right W elcome to Cowes Harbour and the 2019-2020 edition of the Cowes Harbour Handbook, the official guide to Cowes, East Cowes and the River Medina. We feel sure that you will enjoy your visit to Cowes, one of the most famous sailing towns in the world. Every year Cowes hosts a wide range of regattas and events throughout the year. e highlight is Lendy Cowes Week, which attracts many thousands of competitors and visitors to watch the racing, as well as enjoy the many shops, pubs and restaurants the town has to offer and of course the famous Friday night fireworks display. For 2019, we have the added bonus of SailGP racing spectacular foiling catamarans in the Solent. e Round the Island race is another highlight, plus Panerai British Classic Week and Cowes Classics Week, and this year the Rolex Fastnet Race, which only takes place every two years. A key part of Cowes Harbour Commission’s (CHC’s) remit is to support the towns of Cowes and East Cowes and their businesses, as well as the many and varied marine businesses based around the River Medina. e Cowes Harbour Handbook contains comprehensive listings of all these businesses and we hope you find it useful. CHC continues to take a pro-active approach to managing and developing the harbour for the benefit of all users. Over the winter CHC has invested in the dredging of a new Eastern Channel. e new channel and extra depth will make life easier and safer for smaller cra entering and leaving the harbour. 4 Responsibility for the regulation and management of harbour safety remains CHC’s overriding priority. We understand that to achieve our safety aims and objectives we need to work and communicate with all the users of Cowes Harbour and the Solent. I would strongly advise all harbour users to view our website, which contains all the relevant safety and navigational information and also recommend you sign up to our E-newsletters and Notices to Mariners to keep you updated on Cowes Harbour’s current news and safety information. CHC is committed to working in partnership with all the relevant organisations and companies that have a joint interest in delivering safety in the Solent. is year, we are working closely with the RNLI and the RYA on a number of safety promotions, including the “wear a lifejacket” and “use a safety kill cord” initiatives. e Cowes Harbour Handbook contains essential information for visitors old and new, Island residents, and all harbour users – including important navigation points and of course our essential tide times and Solent Buoy Racer map. We are always happy to hear from you about any aspect of Cowes Harbour; please contact me, one of the Harbour Commissioners, or a member of the Harbour Advisory Committee. Capt.
