EVENTS CHRIS BROWN CHRIS BROWN A wide range of historic yachts compete in Cowes Spring Classics The social side is as important as the racing Following the tremendous success of the inaugural Cowes Spring Classics in 2018 the regatta is back this year. e idea behind the regatta is to create an event that is relaxed both on and off the water to start the season, where the social side and the appreciation of the yachts is as important as the racing. Based at Shepards Marina, Cowes Spring Classics is open to a wide range of classic yachts large and small, with yachts from 20 foot to 60 foot competing last year. e regatta is organised by MSJ events with racing run by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. leeward courses or round-the-cans racing, to suit the wishes of each class. e total entry for the week is expected to be over 160 boats, including some of the most traditional and elegant classic designs from around the Solent and further afield, with classes for metre boats, dayboats such as the Darings, Solent Sunbeams and X One Designs, classic yachts and Old Gaffers plus modern yachts in the Spirit of Tradition class. Organised by sailors for sailors, there is a full and varied social programme each evening involving the yacht clubs of Cowes, starting with Winkworth Tea and Cakes provided at the Royal London Yacht Club each day. e high standard of racing is possible because of the support of the club’s enthusiastic volunteers and the regatta’s generous sponsors.
