__________________________________________________________________________________ An enduring contemporary symbol of metamorphosis and change, butterfly patterns spring from the cocoon of winter and offer an alternative to the predictability of a floral print in warmer months (flowers can be picked, but butterflies must be waited on or caught). Florals are an obvious, if not, perennial look for the snow-melting months. Butterflies are as quintessentially spring as flowers, yet the former isn’t viewed as a classic spring pattern like florals. (What gives?) Luckily, that means there’s a sense of freshness and novelty in trying butterfly prints. If we get beyond the floral chintz, we can see there are butterflies flying across a number of pieces, from dresses to accessories, so spotting a gorgeous print is easier than one might think. Some designers have already made butterflies a recurring theme in their work. Designs can range from bold and abstract to soft and girly. Yes, some of them butterfly prints. Butterflies are an apt symbol of our era’s fashion: timeless but with an apocalyptic tone as we slowly swap out the natural world for its virtual counterpart. The generation that equates butterflies with innocence! We saw a gorgeous multi-colour butterfly tank top at Naeem Khan, paired with high waisted sheer black trousers. At both the Jasmine and Zang Toi shows, butterflies decorated the shoulders of models in lovely dresses. These details from the runways are proof. Butterfly embellishments showed up in quite a few of the outfits worn on the spring/ summer 2019 runways, adding cheery fun. The butterfly shoes are still making a huge impact on the Instagram and Pintrest feeds. Butterflies are taking over the summer dress scene, in the form of brightly printed dresses or multi coloured 3D butterfly cut outs clustered around a single shoulder area. Those who want something truly different from the normal floral would enjoy giving this trend a try. The prints are already available in the local H&M and Zara stores. For those still not ready to suck in the full nectar of the new trend, start of small with a simple brooch or even earring. Article by Razeena Docrat Stylist for Covered Magazine 33
