That's when I decided to start an
organisation, ‘Single Muslim
Mums’. My aim is to get a
conversation going about how to
end the stigma attached to single
mothers within the Muslim
community. I want these women to
have a safe haven, somewhere they
feel they belong, surrounded with
like-minded women facing similar
issues. Since I started this journey,
many women have come forward
and told me how much of a lifeline
the women’s-only Facebook group
has been for them. This is
testament to the reality of this issue
within our Muslim communities.
Remember: A mother is a mother regardless of her marital status. She deserves the respect
that Islam has given her. Our religion puts a high value on mothers and it’s time we see this
reflected in the way Muslim communities treat single Muslim mothers .
Misbah Akhtar is the founder of Single Muslim Mums. She
is a finalist for the British Muslim Awards 2018 for
‘Entrepreneur of the Year’. She is also the author of
Ramadan Without Daddy (Amazon): the first Muslim
children's book looking at the topic of divorce and absentee
fathers from a child's perspective. Misbah has been
featured on BBC radio 4, BBC Asian network, Islam channel,
Sisters Magazine, and Pure Matrimony - to name a few.
