COURSE : Engineering Science Introductory Statement The S3 course is designed to build upon the broad general education delivered in S1 and S2 and provide a bridge to National 4 and 5 courses in S4 . A range of pupil centred lessons will be offered to facilitate skills development and to engage pupils in challenging new experiences .
Aims & Objectives Throughout this course the emphasis will be to allow the pupils , through investigative and problem solving tasks to improve their understanding and knowledge of the engineering and scientific developments that surround them in today`s world . The course may include topics such as , transport , energy saving , communication , construction methods , renewable energy and modern materials .
Course Content Pupils will engage in a range of investigative and problem solving tasks which will reflect on the three main sections of the national 4 and 5 course :
Electrical and electronic systems .
Pupils will develop a basic understanding of electrical and electronic systems by analysing simple control problems and design and construct solutions .
Engineering contexts and challenges .
Pupils will develop a basic understanding of engineering and its role and impact in today`s society . Pupils will investigate basic engineering problems and solutions using existing and emerging technologies , and consider their economic social and environmental issues .
Mechanical systems .
Pupils will develop a basic understanding of mechanical systems by analysing simple engineering problems and design and construct solutions .
Skills Developed It is expected that pupils will develop broad generic skills throughout this course . These skills are based on the SQA`s Skills framework ; skills for learning , skills for life and skills for work .
The main skills areas are : Numeracy . Information handling Employability , enterprise and citizenship . Information and communication technology Thinking skills . Remembering , understanding .
Assessment Pupil work will be continually assessed in a variety of ways and feedback on progress will be shared throughout S3 and S4 . Continuous assessment of classwork and unit test scores will be used by Teachers to ensure pupils are embarking upon the correct level as they enter the Senior Phase in S4 . At the end of S4 , pupils will be involved in formal SQA assessments which may involve exams , project work , or a combination of both , depending upon the subject and level of study . Progression Routes Pupils will progress into Access 3 , National 4 , or National 5 depending upon progress made throughout S3 . They will then be formally presented at this level at the end of S4 . Pupils may return to school into S5 and S6 where they can progress to Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications .
