She’s not only the “Voice” but she is the wife of Michael Cuffe. The couple, who were friends for four years before they got married approximately three years ago, has made the journey together from the island of Jamaica onto the world stage. As an artiste who calls music her “bread an buttah,” Tessanne Chin now has more to slather onto her plate…much more. Since most have been focusing on her as an artiste, we thought that we’d put more of a focus on the marital unit that makes Tessanne who she really is; and explore the lives of both husband and wife, together.
Fate always has it that “what is, will is” as they say in Jamaica. Michael happened to meet Tessanne through a mutual friend who was trying to get airplay for her music. Most of us would have heard “Hideaway” by now; and as Michael is a known radio personality at RJR in Jamaica, he was approached. Wanting to personally say ‘thank you’ for the airplay, Tessanne visited Michael, and the rest – as they say – is history. And they continue to make and be part of history, with Michael’s unforgettable reaction to Tessanne’s Voice win and their visit to the White House in America, where Tessanne performed alongside legendary greats for Michelle and Barack Obama.
But how does this husband describe his celebrity wife? Well, his special name for her is “Tessy.” As he states, “She is sweet, extremely funny, caring,” and of his decision to wed the lady with the voice, he calls it, “the most amazing decision I have ever made.” He is the self-proclaimed biggest supporter of the artiste, Tessanne Chin. You’d note that there is a difference between Tessanne Cuffe and Tessanne Chin: one is the person and one is the artiste…and it is that person who Michael has so gladly given his heart. And how has stardom affected their relationship? Well, for those of us who are fans, we’re the guilty ones. Many times during a meal, they have both had to stop eating, so as to take photos and sign autographs for fans – what one may call the ‘downside’ of being a celebrity.
Of course, there has been a drastic change in schedules as well. Tessanne is now performing all over the world, not only in Jamaica, and with her husband’s professional commitments, they may not always be together as they like. So, where do children fit into the picture? Tessanne smiled on international television, as she emphatically stated, “Okay. Celine said it; I’m gonna do it.” She was referring to a backstage conversation where Celine Dion asked if she had any children and told her to wait a bit, focus on getting a nice house – among other things – and then in about five years, pop a bun into the oven. So, there’ll be no baby Tessannes or Michaels just yet…but we’ll just wait half a decade and see what more’s in store!
