FROM THE COVER
ORDINANCE TIPS
• Stay in the Limited Self-Governance lane! Be extra careful that your proposed ordinance does not
exceed the county’s authority, especially as revisions are made in the drafting process.
• Be sure to include input from county personnel that can help with setting up the ordinance (i.e.
county license inspector can advise on citations and procedures regarding fines).
• Consult other counties that have adopted the same type of Limited Self-Governance ordinance
under consideration.
• Where possible, consider reducing confusion for citizens by drafting a county ordinance that
aligns with local municipal ordinances.
• Consider establishing a single set of notice and appeal procedures that apply for all ordinance
adopted under Limited Self-Governance.
• Make sure legal research includes a review of related state laws.
