Pick Me Up is more of a honky tonker with a 90s feel that reminds me of the songs Harlan Howard was writing late in his career — it’s a really great song and I love the line “I can’t seem to put down this pick me up”. The maturity of their song writing, though, really shows on Innocent which not only makes a great point about how life screws us up, it does so in three quarter time, tinged with mandolin, fiddle and a great tune. The song most likely destined for the greatest column inches and rave reactions will probably be Heroine which is a hard-hitting song of drug addiction that could only have come from a close connection to somebody dealing with such a problem. “I’d be the heroine instead of letting heroin win”, is some intelligent and quality song writing. You Ain’t Sleeping Over No More has a feisty, thigh-slapping Dixie Chicks attitude and insistent fiddle. I won’t be surprised if this is a universally acclaimed album with major label execs knocking at these girls’ doors. Contemporary country as it should be.
