albumreviews THE KRICKETS Redbird  1/2 I Am Strong / Shame Game / Redbird / Stay / Waiting In Vain / Lay Them Down / A Love Like Mine / Ghosts / You Didn’t Come After Me / What Do You Say? / May We Find Producer: Sam Ashworth Self release 36:10 The Krickets are four women who play Americana music. The band’s internet site says they are from America’s Gulf Coast. The new album is the band’s second, their first being 2016’s Spanish Moss Sirens. The band first got together to play a charity concert in aid of cancer relief. Now for every album sold, a donation is made to the charity. The new release kicks off with its weakest track, I Am Strong. The arrangement is too modern for the song which leans towards country-pop. The second track is better but the album only begins to take-off with its title song, Redbird. Here we get an interesting song with atmosphere and a slight off-beat feel. A good vocal as well, plus, lets not forget the banjo. This track would have made a much better opening song. The most country track on the album is Stay. This wonderful song is an engaging ballad with steel guitar and a passionate vocal. It’s a plea for a lover to stay, not leave. Stay clocks-in at over four minutes but not a second is wasted. Another track of some note is You Didn’t Come After Me, an Americana-gospel affair with another strong vocal. This one seems too short at just over two minutes. The Krickets new release ends with two entertaining songs - What Do You Say? starts as a delicate ballad then speeds-up with the arrival of a banjo. Final song, May We Find also starts slowly then builds, with the vocalist sounding a bit like Stevie Nicks. The fairly modern arrangement for a 1970’s style song does work here and makes for a good ending. The Krickets have now produced two entertaining albums - the first is on Bandcamp. Fans of quality Americana should be listening to The Krickets. The four women involved know how to make entertaining music, the new album does have a slightly wobbly start but with what follows this can be forgiven. Redbird like most birds, takes-off.
