album of original songs. There are no carols and not much religion, although there are little nods to God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Silent Night and Winter Wonderland. Come Christmas with some lovely guitar sounds like a carol but it is a love song. Crowell has brought in his daughters Hannah and Caitlin and a few guest artists and the result is the best Christmas album I have heard since, well, 1957. Rodney Crowell was inspired to make this album after hearing Hayes Carll’s Grateful For Christmas, which is an hilarious, Loudon Wainwright-styled song about a dysfunctional family celebrating the season. Crowell wrote Christmas Everywhere with John Jorgenson and they have copied Spike Jones’ madcap, frenetic style as one image comes after another, but the song has a slow coda in which Lera Lynn wishes for a time machine so that she stop John Lennon being assassinated, although how does she know she will be successful. Christmas Makes Me Sad is standard country fare, a sad country song, written with Chuck Cannon, and a very good one. It is followed by the similarly-themed Merry Christmas From An Empty Bed, but as the title suggests this is a more off-the-wall Crowell lyric. There is a verse from the girl’s perspective too, sung by Brennen Leigh. Crowell says goodbye to an old girlfriend on Christmas For The Blues, another superb track, and my advice would be to get the song to Willie Nelson for next year. Another song of past love, Christmas In New York, has so many odd touches that it has to be personal. In 2012 Crowell made an excellent album Kin with Mary Karr and here they offer Christmas In Vidor which is an extension of that record. When I first heard the song, I heard it as “Christmas Inviter” and couldn’t work out what it was about. Now I know Vidor is a place in Texas. It’s an excellent song and narration with a full string accompaniment. Crowell ends up spending the Christmas season on Prozac and beer. Although it is well done and has some lively rock and roll piano, there is not much melody or lyrical invention about Very Merry Christmas. It’s a bit like Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime, which passes three minutes but you know he can do much better. On the other hand, the lyrical invention is tremendous on Let’s Skip Christmas This Year. The Crowells have had enough of family Christmases and are shutting up shop: “Dinner plates will be thrown, your old uncle will leer, We don’t belong in that sphere, let’s skip Christmas this year.” You may want to skip Christmas but please don’t skip this album, and please note that as well as downloads and CDs, the album is available on four different vinyls – standard black, black and grey, red and white vinyl, and red and green. This suggests that Rodney Crowell rather likes Christmas.
