Eddie Hallam Fascinated By Wildlife … I have always been totally absorbed and fascinated by wildlife and when I went to university to study biological sciences ( what else ?) I became aware of the need to be able to sketch well , as this was the traditional way of recording field observations . There has been a long tradition of biologists being artists and vice versa . Accurate observation being a common factor to both . To this day , I like nothing better than sketching wildlife in some wild and remote location . My interest in sketching quite naturally led me to explore the medium of painting and from there I developed an interest in working in 3 dimensions . Initially I made woodcarvings but bronze was always in my sights . Its permanence appealed to me . After an extended stay on St Kilda to work on a bird survey , I brought back many sketches of seabirds . From these sketches I sculpted a puffin . It was with some trepidation that I sent it to a foundry to be cast in bronze but when I held the finished product in my hand , I knew I had found the medium I had been looking for . I have travelled widely to study and sketch wildlife but my favourite subjects are still the British species and I now have more than 75 subjects in bronze ranging from gannets to wrens .
