Curtain Up On Murder
Murder , mystery and intrigue are in store for audiences who go to see the Marlowe Players ’ next production , Curtain Up On Murder . Director Suzi Illston who will be producing for the Marlowes for the seventh time was looking for a play when she came across Bettine Manktelow ’ s 1998 comedy thriller . “ It caught my attention because it ’ s a whodunnit with humour and twists which kept me wanting to read right to the end .” The plot involves an amateur drama group rehearsing a play in an end-of-thepier theatre when they are inexplicably locked in . Events take a sinister turn as a mysterious , ghostly presence passes across the stage . When the assistant stage manager falls to her death through a trap door , the remaining actors are thrown into disarray . Curtain Up On Murder has been compared to the world ’ s bestselling mystery , Agatha Christie ’ s And Then There Were None , although none of the characters in Bettine Manktelow ’ s offering has a guilty past . Both plays have gripping but very different endings . “ Curtain Up On Murder has a good , strong cast of eight – five women and three men – and we ’ re using a simple , black staging as I feel this will draw the audience ’ s attention to the action ,” said Suzi . “ There ’ ll be colour in the costumes and props . It ’ s a real audience-pleaser of a play .” The Marlowe Players will perform Curtain Up On Murder at Darley Abbey Village Hall from November 21-25 .
